HOW TO PREPARE EDIT DECISION LISTS

Most offline is created on Avid Media Composers so this guideline is to assist the Avid offline editor in preparing an EDL for Linear Online.

  1. The file format of choice is GVG 7.0 on either an RT-11 or DOS formatted floppy disk.
  2. In the EDL Manager sort the EDL as A-Mode.
  3. In the Options menu master start event should be set to 1. The Reel ID Type should be Tape, Timecode set to Address (LTC). In the Dupe List/Preread section, select for Type None.
  4. Under Comments Check mark only the boxes that include Comments, Patch Info, and Effect Info.
  5. Under Optimization only checkmark Optimize EDL.
  6. Under Standards select NTSC Switcher SMPTE and Audio Channels 4.Please do not create a B-Roll or Pre-Read EDL, we prefer to optimize the EDL using our own software.
  7. Reel names cannot exceed six characters for Grass Valley Edit controllers. Do not use spaces or punctuation for reel names. Do not include reels that end with the letter B.
  8. If you need to convert reel names for online please bring a list of the reel conversions for the online in a printed form.
  9. Tape numbering should be clearly visible on the tape box spine with only one reel number.

TAPE FORMATS

As a facility we try to offer all of the commonly used tape formats for online, this includes Digital Betacam, D-1, D-2, Beta SP, 1", and 3/4", however there are a few less used formats that currently we do not support. We cannot mix standards such as PAL (European) and NTSC (the Americas). Please call for information as to what is available.

VIDEO EFFECTS

Our Edit Suites offer both Abekas Deveous and Grass Valley Kaliedescope as the DVE. Both DVE's offer Ripple, Blur, and Defocus, with a variety of custom Efx programable. If you plan to use DVE for layering or transition EFX please consult with one of our editors as how to get the most out of your DVE time before booking a session.

TITLING

Both Online Suites are equipped with Quanta Delta character generators that can be uploaded with custom PostScript fonts of your choices. Once in the system the font can be manipulated for aspect sizing, bordering, soft shadows, even textures can be loaded in to add dimension to your titles. All titles are archived for your convenience, but please plan ahead if you have multiple titles, or any custom work to be done. The Editors generally can whip out a quick lower third or slate, but we would prefer to preprogram as much of your work as possible with a Delta Operator.

PREBUILT GRAPHICS AND QUICKTIME MOVIES

Photoshop, Illustartor, and After Effects, are all very popular tools for creating elements for online. We can transfer any of these file formats to either digital disk or tape for use during your session, but scheduling of this is a must. We also have available for download file format requirements, and procedures that your graphic artist can follow to insure a quick and successful transition from disk to tape.
